Mission Statement
rePublicArt's goal is to expand the
nature of art in public places
through participatory projects
that help build community
and public appreciation for
the arts as a vehicle for
positive social change
.
Portrait of the Roosevelts - J.Moran Through public participation in and exposure to our traveling exhibits, we intend to increase awareness of socially relevant topics. We are primarily interested in issues that involve active citizenship, participatory democracy, enfranchisement of young people and restoration our natural environment. We also support public consent for use of public space to enhance the human experience rather than commercial exposure. Not only do they counteract all the years of downtown banners that have been crassly geared to promote shows; these diverse and diverting artworks serve a greater purpose. Chris Arnott, New Haven Advocate Based on the premise that public art promotes public dialoge, education, awareness and appreciation for art in public spaces, projects are conducted in collaboration with other common interest organizations, municipalities, schools, community groups and individual artists. All art is made from recycled materials reconstructed to meet applicable standards. Exhibits based on the themes of democracy and US history are non-partisan. Submission of artwork is reviewed and accepted by this requisite. 13th Amendment - Global Artways, Salt Lake City, Utah Neither Slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Environmentally Sound Art
rePublicArt recycles billboard advertisements. Billboard vinyl is thrown away after one use. With the advent of digitally printed billboards, vinyl waste has increased. We use this vinyl to make large billboard size art and city banner art. We also provide this material in custom sizes to artists, workshops, and to cities that wish to conduct independent projects. By using and promoting the use of recycled vinyl we offer a solution to the billboard industry, cities and artists across the country and world.

Hand painted city banners are environmentally and economically sound. The benefits of running a city-wide participatory banner project far exceed those of choosing commercially printed banners while being the same or below the cost of printed banners.
"In New Haven, hundreds of people (many children) worked on the exhibit and were able to create something not only beautiful, but poignant. I applaud their efforts."

City Lamppost Banners:
In general, existing city lamppost banners are made of similar material and are often not re-used, creating more vinyl to be disposed of. We also recycle these lamppost banners. New Haven's Heart of the City exhibit was created from Jazz Concert banners from the previous year. The artwork we make for city lamppost exhibitions can travel or be hung elsewhere, indoor and outdoor. Workshops and rented exhibits encourage sustainable and sound environmental practices.

Based in Connecticut her workshops, lectures and consulting for public participatory projects have brought her to Europe and across the United States. New Haven, CT has provided a testing ground for new banner exhibit ideas. Most exhibits start in New Haven and then travel or are replicated in other communities.
In recent years the rise of public concern and understanding of "democracy" became a pressing and unavoidable issue. Knowing that art can make a difference, she conceived of the "We the People" lamppost banner exhibit and has ventured out to gain widespread public participation to teach democracy and take back public space for "art with a cause". Fellow teaching artists in Connecticut were excited to get involved and trained to conduct banner workshops, enabling the project to reach more communities. Now expanding beyond CT boarders the lamppost banners have been made in other New England states, Kentucky, Utah, and Michigan. With banner designs sent in from people all over, including Europe, the project has taken on a national presence.
Ms. Moran offers training to teachers, community organizers and artists to conduct banner workshops using recycled billboard material. rePublicArt.org is now a growing network of artists, organizations and people making art to make a difference.
